She examines the unique harms these communities experience, critiques the limitations of current technological responses, and uses participatory design methods to co-develop tailored safety interventions. Her research with the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN), in collaboration with WESNET, the eSafety Commissioner, and the Victorian Pride Centre, produced a national report with design and policy recommendations for social media safety that meets the needs of women and gender-diverse users. Her current DECRA fellowship extends this work to other underrepresented and disproportionately at-risk communities, including people with disabilities and culturally and linguistically diverse users (CALD) in Australia.

Professor of Global Studies at RMIT University. Her research focuses on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including image-based sexual abuse, sextortion and AI-generated sexual harms. She has led multiple national and international studies examining the prevalence, impacts, and prevention of digital abuse and works closely with policymakers, technology companies, and frontline services. Nicola is the co-developer of Umibot, a survivor-centred chatbot designed to support people affected by image-based abuse, and her work is grounded in feminist and design justice approaches to technology.
Senior Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne's Centre for AI and Digital Ethics. Her research examines how to design AI systems responsibly for the people most affected by them. Her recent work focuses on contestability — how AI systems can be designed so that people can meaningfully challenge algorithmic decisions that affect them, including decisions related to online safety, such as content moderation. She is particularly focused on translating high-level principles and regulatory standards into practical guidance for designers, developers, and policymakers. Her background spans law, policy, psychology, and human-computer interaction (HCI).

Her research focuses on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for social good, with expertise in discourse processing, computational social science, cyberbullying, mental health, and AI in education.
